About the Foundation

The Foundation

The Josef Herman Art Foundation Cymru is dedicated to promoting an appreciation of the life and work of the Polish refugee artist, Josef Herman and in his name fostering a wider participation in the arts and an awareness of human rights.

This is done through our annual schools project, exhibitions, events, lectures, community engagement and support for an annual people’s choice prize at the National Eisteddfod of Wales.

Josef Herman The Artist

Exhibiting in Glasgow, Edinburgh and London he established himself as a professional artist. In 1944 he and his first wife Catriona visited Ystradgynlais in the Swansea Valley. The mining village made such an impact on him that they decided to make it their home until 1955.
